Neu-Hohenschönhausen has a dense tram network. The M5, M17 and several other lines connect the district with Lichtenberg, Alexanderplatz and the rest of the city. That's of little help for getting to BER. Anyone heading to the airport first takes the tram to the S-Bahn station Hohenschönhausen or Lichtenberg, changes there to the S-Bahn, travels to Ostkreuz or Südkreuz and takes the FEX. Two to three changes, 60 to 80 minutes of travel time.
Early in the morning the trams are still empty, but the connections with the S-Bahn don't always line up. A missed FEX at Südkreuz means 30 minutes of waiting. And anyone returning from BER late in the evening experiences the opposite: the last trams to Neu-Hohenschönhausen run around midnight, after which only the night bus is left, taking a detour across half of Lichtenberg.

From Neu-Hohenschönhausen to BER it is around 28 kilometres. A taxi shows 45 to 65 euros on the meter for it. Via Landsberger Allee and the A113 the trip takes 35 minutes on a clear road.
